My Wash Day Routine

Hello Everyone,

I decided to let you all in on how I take care of my hair every week to maintain a healthy hair. This steps ensure that my hair is super moisturized throughout the week.

Step by step process

I typically wash my hair every Saturday morning.

STEP 1 – PRE POO: If my hair feels really dry, I do this step first, otherwise I just skip ahead to the steps below. Pre-poo is when you apply a treatment to your hair before you wash/condition. This process helps to reduce dryness in your hair especially when you use a shampoo to wash your hair.

To pre-poo, I apply a mixture of heated oils, put on a plastic cap/bag and leave it on overnight.

NB: I do not microwave heat the oil, I put the bowl of my oil mixture in a bigger bowl of hot water to get heated.

I also apply the oil mixture to my hair when its dry for better results.

My oil mixture:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Argan Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Black seed oil (sometimes)

STEP 2 – SHAMPOO: If I don’t pre-poo first, this step becomes my first step. I shampoo with my Curls Unleashed Shampoo (every other week). I like to use shampoo’s that don’t strip my hair out (sulfate-free shampoo’s).

The week I don’t shampoo, I co-wash (conditioner-only washing). With this, your hair remains clean but isn’t stripped of the natural oils. I like to use the Cantu co-wash

STEP 3: Once that’s done, I condition with a Curls Unleashed Rinse-out Conditioner. This step isn’t necessary if you are going to deep condition.

STEP 4: I also like to deep condition my hair- I do this every week. Deep conditioning your hair is a way to restore moisture, and strengthen your hair. I use the Curls Unleashed Intense Hair Conditioner or the Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque. Sometimes I make my own deep conditioner

Recipes you can use:

Wash your hair first. Then massage the conditioner in. Leave in your hair for about 15-45 mins then rinse out.

NB: divide your hair into different sections for easy application

Recipe 1

  • 1 table spoon of Honey
  • 1 table spoon of Coconut Oil

Recipe 2

  • 1 ripe avocado- Mash it
  • 1 table of olive oil
  • Mayonnaise (optional)

Recipe 3

  • 1 ripe Banana- Mash it
  • 2 table spoons of olive oil
  • 2 table spoons of honey

STEP5: After rinsing out my hair with cold water, I wrap my hair with a cotton T-shirt but I don’t let it dry completely

STEP 6: I then seal in the moisture with coconut oil and Shea butter.

STEP 7: I either put my hair in twists, corn row it and slap on a wig, or do my desired style. Depending on what look I am going for.

To sleep at night, I use a scarf/satin bonnet. If my hair isn’t in twists or corn rows, then it’s in a pineapple.

  1. Thank you for reminding of me of ‘pre poo’. At the beginning of my natural hair, I did this all the time, then I must have forgotten along the way. Great post
